Regarding abortion, that's not a strange position to hold. He is saying that given the current state of science and understanding and the fact that there is no 'objective truth' regarding when life begins, that it is each woman's choice (and consequently that if it IS wrong in the eyes of god or whomever, that they will pay the price themselves as it was their decision.) That's like an agnostic saying that he's unsure of God but supports both atheists and Christians rights to believe what they will.
Here is his reasoning regarding the gay marriage thing:

Here is his reply to the immigrant issue - he's focused on attacking the root of the problem, and not merely covering up the 'symptoms':
