Emo- (From what I've come to understand) was a trend in the 80's characterized by sweatervests and horn rimmed glasses, along with boot cut jeans for both genders and music that we would now consider "Indie."

New-Emo (as I call it)- is the emo we see today, mostly teenagers with a pity-me complex who are in many cases anime/manga obsessed. The boys often have long hair and "fringes" and often wear black band t-shirts with skinny jeans. The girls have more variety here. Many prefer long, layered hair or just natural hairstlyes as their parent's wont let them dye or change it. The girls often wear skinny jeans as well, but in a variety of colors. Most are vampire obsessed due to the newest vampire fad:twilight.

Goth- Goth can be alot of diffrent things. Most agree that the style we see today that is considered "goth" started sometime around the 70's around the time "Punk" started to really emerge. There are now many types and styles of goth including Cyber Goth, Gothic Lolita, Victorian Goth (arguably "steam punk"), Punk-Goth and a more common goth along with many others. Though some goths do tend to sway toward the vampirism crowd, I know very few personally that have. For some, being Gothic is about finding beauty in all things, including pain, darkness, and death. Hence why many goths have adopted egyptian hyrogyliphics and anks, as a symbol of both beauty and death. There are very few true to the life goths out there today, and as so many other styles, is often experimented with in youth as a "phase."

Well, Lolita can be gothic, but not always, many times it is delicate and sweet, very girly. Lots of ruffles. And there is Wa Lolita, an oriental spin on it. But Lolita is pretty much it's own style. So is steampunk(kinda Neo-Victorian, dystopian, and mad scintist-like.).

Emo, punk, and goth are all entirely different things. I really wish outsiders would stop with this junk. If you're new to your chosen "scene", if you haven't done any research, or if you're an outsider all together, please don't attempt to define anything.

Ok now.

For starters, I feel obligated to mention that both emo and goth emerged out of various offshoots of the punk scene. Punk is roughly ten years older than emo and goth, and had already had ample time to branch out into many directions by the time emo and goth came around. But I won't go into it too heavily because it's not really part of this thread. Suffice it to say that, though they have similar roots, all three (punk, emo, goth) have moved into entirely different directions in the last two to three decades.

Now to be clear, I'm really upset with what emo has become. In its early days, it really had a lot of potential. Emo started in DC in the eighties as a subgenre of hardcore. Rites of Spring and Moss Icon are both commonly cited as being the "first" emo band, though as with anything, I'd call both assertations innaccurate because emo evolved slowly over time. It wasn't "invented" by any one band. I think we all know that the term "emo" is derived from the word "emotional", referring to the fact that emo songs tend to have particularly emotionally-charged lyrics. However, first wave emo has an aggressive sound, and though the lyrics are certainly emotional, the range of emotions was much wider than in third wave emo, which is what is popular today. Third wave emo focuses almost exclusively on negative emotions, and is, I'm sorry to say, largely a contrived corporate identification meant to make its followers feel "alternative", while still being a cash cow. Not meaning to offend anybody, that's just my observation.

Goth on the other hand, has been waaaay more perverted by the mass media, though the true underground "goth" culture surprising remains largely intact. Believe it or not, the goth and emo scenes emerged around the same time (early to mid '80s). And, much like emo, goth music initially had a much different sound than what we associate it with today. Take a listen to Siouxie and the Banshees' "Happy House" and you'll certainly see what I mean. To make a long story short, goth eventually evolved into a sort of moody synth-rock, and now has a much more visual style than emo or punk.

I can't really define "emo" or "goth" very well, but here it goes. . .

Emo - Emotional, goth- and punk-inspired. It used to be somewhat like indie. These days, emos are characterized by side hair parts over one eye, black hair, excessive crying, and cutting. That isn't to say that all emos do any of that, but that is the stereotypical emo. This is typically just a phase.

Poser-Goth, also known as the Attention-Hog Goth - Characterized by excessive black clothing, chains, and the like. They often have an Invader ZIM and/or Marilyn Manson obsession and will let you know this constantly, and they also say, "I'm goth," or some variation of it. They will often say this, and then later retort, "Don't label me!!" They only dress goth to get the attention they want. This is often a phase.

Gothic - Fascinated by death, and liken it to a dark, misunderstood beauty. They dress in ways that reflect this - strange and obscure, but beautiful to them. They often wear black, but there are "white goths" out there who reflect the Eastern belief that white is the color of death as opposed to black. A definite goth image is the Egyptian ankh, the symbol for life. This is a little contradictory, unless the ankh is inverted, but you get the idea. Goths often try to reflect certain time periods - the Renaissance, the Victorian Era, the Middle Ages, and the like.

Steampunk - A sub-version of cyberpunk, developed in the '80's. It takes the idea of the future and applies it to the past - namely, the Victorian Era. It is influenced by the works of Charles Babbage (Hence, Babbage Boardwalk and Babbage Beach.) and H.G. Wells. Time-travel is a big part of steampunk, as well as futuristic ideas Victorianized with clock gears, brass, and copper. Black is NOT a large staple of steampunk. Brown, copper, cream, and gold are. Air-travel is important in steampunk - from dirigibles to air-ships, you can't escape it. Wearing watch parts is also a big thing with steampunk style. It also focuses on ideas of a 9-like post-apocalyptic dystopia, fueled by industry. It's partially influenced by goth, but in no way is the same thing, even though it is sometimes called "Victorian Goth." Steampunk clothing is not common, and most steampunkers buy their items from Clockwork Couture, Etsy, eBay, and other online sources. Or they just make their own.

Lolita - A typically Japanese style aimed to look like dolls or young Victorian girls with a modern edge. Short, full skirts and elaborate dresses are typical. There are many kinds of lolita - there are Gothic Lolita, Sweet Lolita, Punk Lolita, Grotesque Lolita, Black Lolita, White Lolita, Classic Lolita, and the list goes on. Shoes often include rocking-horse heels and platforms. The boy version is called "dandy," but aristocrat is another popular option for boys. You can find examples of lolita dresses in the manga (comic book) Bizenghast or in the Gothic & Lolita Bible, a magazine that can be found in almost any bookstore.

Hope this helps a bit!
