Poser-Goth, also known as the Attention-Hog Goth - Characterized by excessive black clothing, chains, and the like. They often have an Invader ZIM and/or Marilyn Manson obsession and will let you know this constantly, and they also say, "I'm goth," or some variation of it. They will often say this, and then later retort, "Don't label me!!" They only dress goth to get the attention they want. This is often a phase.

Sure, but who doesn't love a good Jhonen Vasquez work nowadays, huh?

Notwithstanding we are all individul personalities with myriad experiences and genetics; but if you're looking to socially categorize people by judgement of style / interest / culture then heres my personal observations:
*note* no offense is intentended towards anyone -- feel free to criticize

Emo = Fluffy and sad; Goth = Genuinely dark inside

Goths come in a few varieties or may well be a mixture of all or none: The 'classic' goth tends to veer towards dark romantic styles influenced by victoriana.
The 'Pagan' goth wears black and especially the women may wear long lace and velvet dresses and black makeup.
The 'Metal' goth is very influenced by the death/black metal music scene and may have tribal tattoos piercings and wear black/metal clothing
The 'Cyber' goth is a 90's variety that is influenced by music such as industrial techno. These goths may have many peircings and tattoos and wear UV clothes with their black.
The 'MTV' goth is obsessed with the cultural image of gothicness and commercial 'goth' bands such as Marilyn Manson and Cradle of Filth. Fashion for them is based on these rock stars and group consensus-- these are manufactured clonie goths.
All goths of both genders may wear black eyeliner and have long hair or any unusual hairstyle particularly black and maybe with colored streaks.
Goths are miserable sombre folks or just quiet and contemplative --some are morbid and some like to shock. Hardcore goths do perform pagan rituals others just smoke cigarettes drink black coffee and sit in pub corners.
Goths are realists; they know that death is a reality and understand the fragile nature of existance so may appear morbid but they just feel the mortality of the human disposition more than others.

Vampire wannabe: is just a vampire wannabe -- a romantic subculture based on mythology and ritual: people can drink blood but they cant live forever and 'turn' other people undead xD

Emos literally means 'emotional' and the music scene came about I'd say with bands like The Cure and The Smiths in the 1980's.
As was previously pointed out these emos called their music 'indie' (named after the the independant labels of a lot of the cultural bands). Emos listened to Blur and Oasis in the 1990's so theyre not new; just more public.
At the moment its a trend like punks in the 70's and hippies in the 60's. It is the contemporary counter culture of the 00's.
Emos appear as sad and fragile creatures often with fluffy bits and sad makeup.
Hair may be black or brightly colored and fluffy or floppy. They may wear completely black but it usually will be t-shirts with emo logos or motifs. They also wear black eyeliner (both genders).
Emos may wear rectangular glasses and usually have a fringe about down to their nose so they can hide their faces. There is a heavy manga influences in their clothing and hairstyles -- the shape and design of a lot of emo fashion items are japanese based. Emos also may have peircings and well placed tribal tattoos although not too many as they dont want to end up too punk..

I've never met a goth that was truely miserable, though I have met a few with genuine depression.

Also Pagan=/= Goth. My girlfriend is neo-pagan. She's the sunniest, cheeriest, most optimistic person I know. The only thing she even owns that is black is her funeral outfit. Even that is just a black dress with pink, blue, and orance embroidering on it.

I've met goths that were Catholic (Or other denominations of Christian), Atheist, Budhist, Jewish, pagan and whatever else.

I think that if you're going to claim to be a goth, you should talk to other goths especially off the internet, and get your facts straight.

Ok, just so people know, emo is a ripp off. Goth came first then these stupid people came and said well lets start shopping at this store and call our selves emo, and we can shair in the basking in darkness. Well they where ass wrong, not only do we not appreceate the emo people stealing our stile and calling it there one but they are just whiny people who have nothing better to do than just sit there in there room in there fake "emo" clothing pretending to hate the world and everything in it. Oh and the whole cutting them selves thing is so bogus. So if anyone ever calls me emo then i will rip there soal out by a finger and doom it to hell for the rest of eternity.

You said "Hardcore goths do preform pagan rituals." Implying that to be a goth you must be pagan, which inversely might lead people to believe that all pagans are goth.

I've had 8 years experince at speaking french, doesn't mean I don't still use the wrong verbs or that I don't have more to learn.

I Hope this helps.

Metal =/= Goth. Industrial =/=goth emo=/= goth

3 Subcategories of Goth:
-Deathrock (American Gothic music like cinema strange)
-Batcave (British Goth like Bauhaus & Specimen)
-Horror Punk (Lugosi's Morphine)
-Gothbilly/i forgot optional name (The Cult)

and Gothpop ( The Cure, Strawberry Switchblade) Not sure if this category exits at all :/
