From what I see and interpret, IMHO; Emo are kinda raised with the anime cartoons on TV without the otaku complex as they kinda mimic in real life how cartoons express their emotions... And Goth more like retro-visioned German expressionists mixed with some Victorian traits in origin before it developped into trash metal influences. | |||||

Uh,I think "goth" is just when you like to wear .. Dark things, but I don't know anybody that labels theirself a certain thing. Emo isn't really anything, it's a genre of music...

From what I learned from history classes and what I do observe from my German expressionism interests... Well Goth comes from Gothic from the darkages between cathedrals and baroque style way before Rococo. Since there was pest and illnesses in that time along as witch hunting, and that the 70's brought in new ages and then loosen society left pagans resurface over along with the opposite of my beliefs first from litterature only (Dracula, Chtullu) and attracted out of daylight folks, they reappeared along with first the darker side of metal and integrated a few victorian but dark accessories. And IMHO there were a LOT less emo before the invasion of manga and japanese outburst of videogame. Let say before end-80's. Since it is also celebrating the extreme display of emotions, it brings from day to day life what was reserved first in burlesque and pantomime. Since new generations spend more time in fantassy than with their familly in a recreational society where almost everything comes effortlessly, it gives birth of otaku type of peoples, cosplayers, and adult-kids that express themselves better the same way cartoon animators do in front of a miror while penciling latest animated feature. Note also the costuming that gets out of the wardrobe that more and more meet the fantasy standards of the medias. Now, keep in mind that I'm almost 40 and I know that someone being Goth or Emo didn't woke up a morning deciding they would try to get the look of Fritz Lang's esthetism or in darker aspect with a shroud of mystery around him. Neighter someone in the same case get out of bed and get a little dance like sailor moon to dress on and bawls like her if they gets in front of a spider.

Emo- (From what I've come to understand) was a trend in the 80's characterized by sweatervests and horn rimmed glasses, along with boot cut jeans for both genders and music that we would now consider "Indie." New-Emo (as I call it)- is the emo we see today, mostly teenagers with a pity-me complex who are in many cases anime/manga obsessed. The boys often have long hair and "fringes" and often wear black band t-shirts with skinny jeans. The girls have more variety here. Many prefer long, layered hair or just natural hairstlyes as their parent's wont let them dye or change it. The girls often wear skinny jeans as well, but in a variety of colors. Most are vampire obsessed due to the newest vampire fad:twilight. Goth- Goth can be alot of diffrent things. Most agree that the style we see today that is considered "goth" started sometime around the 70's around the time "Punk" started to really emerge. There are now many types and styles of goth including Cyber Goth, Gothic Lolita, Victorian Goth (arguably "steam punk"), Punk-Goth and a more common goth along with many others. Though some goths do tend to sway toward the vampirism crowd, I know very few personally that have. For some, being Gothic is about finding beauty in all things, including pain, darkness, and death. Hence why many goths have adopted egyptian hyrogyliphics and anks, as a symbol of both beauty and death. There are very few true to the life goths out there today, and as so many other styles, is often experimented with in youth as a "phase."
