The Shawshank Redemption was a movie and the same thing happened in real life in 2007. Just because a movie is made doesn't mean something's not going to happen.

The Government can't openly say "The world's going to end on this day"
Do you realize what kind of an impact that would make? Not only would people be panicing like crazy, people who would've otherwise refrained from breaking the law for fear of getting caught, wouldn't have any reason not to rob that bank, or to murder those people, or to get high everyday. People would stop going to school and their jobs, and the world would just shut down. And then even if the world didn't end, every economy would be doing horrible, there'd be no order at all, and no one would trust the government.
