That was my point.

If they are locked up securely, secretly, and the parent knows how to use it, then sure. But if the parent doesn't watch the kid and the kid gets a hold of the gun, I sure as hell blame the parent. Also, parents letting kids play with guns is disgusting, even if it is a hunting gun. A gun is a gun, and it can always be used for violence. Mind you, this is coming from a girl whose parents would pick out the people with guns from the box of Lincoln Logs so that I wouldn't play with little toys that even carried guns. A bit much, yes, but still, it gave me the idea that guns were wrong to use against people, and as a kid, that's all you need to know. Parents telling kids that guns are bad unless you're in war or defending yourself is bad parenting in my opinion. Sure, it's true, but kids are the first to make exceptions, pretend, stretch the boundaries, not see teh reality, etc. Kids have to be told flat out no is no, and when they're older exceptions and the like can be brought into the conversation.

Uh, no, having a gun in a locked drawer or cabinet defeats the purpose of having a gun to be accessed for protection if someone breaks into your house.
Well obviously if you're not home when someone breaks in.
That's what alarm systems are for.

...no, if you're home. What, are you going to go up to the burglar and go "Oh, excuse me, my gun is locked in the safe in my closet, please allow me to go get it"?

Then it all goes into the layout of your house and if you have time to get to it or not.
Honestly, just make it easily accessible to you and not your kid(s).
Technical stuff can't exactly be solved on a forum, sorry. =/

A locked box with a key in lieu of a number-lock can make it quicker, and if the key is on your person at all times, I think it helps.

There is no such thing as easily accessible to you but not to children.

My daughter isn't even a year old yet. If she can figure out how to get the child safety clasps off the cabinets at 9 months, I can guarantee she would figure out how to get into a lock box at 8.
