Default Should People with Children Keep Guns in the House?

From the thread '8 year old boy kills father and father's friend'. On one hand, yes; people should be able to defend their homes and their families, or go hunting, or do whatever they please. On the other hand, things like this happen. Kids find their parents' guns and either kill themselves, or kill other people. What kind of example does it teach your children when you keep guns laying around? Basically, that guns are okay. I think parents need to use that selectively, teach them to not use violence as a first option, etc. Opinions?

Hidden. Yes.
I would never trust a kid with any sort of weapon. I value my life.

Good point. Put them in a closet or a drawer, or better yet a safe; don't just put them in a gun cabinet and call it a day.

Hell to the no. It was said that the dad let the kid play with the gun. How the hell did the kid know how to shoot it anyways? Most guns have a child lock type of thing.

That's true, too. I hate it when parents let kids use guns.. Probably because a kid in the grade above me was accidentally killed when he and his brother were playing with a gun. No one else was home... Awful.

Yes. It's a weapon of defense. If someone comes into your house, it's a hell of a lot easier to threaten them to get out with a gun while calling 911, then just standing there, defensless, waiting for 911.

They just need to put the safety lock on them, and keep them in a gun safe, deal; like my dad did.

No one should keep a gun in the house unless he/she knows how to properly use and keep the gun. If that is the case, children should have no bearing on whether or not to keep a gun. The problem is idiots who don't properly keep their arms locked and who don't watch their children well enough.
