there's an idea, tell the kid that you think they're sooo cute when they curse, if it's from somebody that is sooo uncool, they'll stop quick.

Teach her new words that most people wouldn't think of as swearing, and have a definition handy for every word she brings home. like, ****, it's an old legal term, it does have something to do with sex, but generally, not a good word.

If this belongs in a different forum, I apologize.

Today my daughter said a curse word. Nothing too awfully terrible, but when she dropped some milk on the floor she said "Oh, ****." I was slightly amused but didn't want to let on, because I don't want her to think that this behavior is okay. I said "Amaris! Don't say that, it's a bad word." No doubt she learned this language at school.

So, what say you? If this behavior continues, should I ignore her, scold her...? Opinions are much appreciated! :D
Well seeing as you dont want her saying that, you should scold her maybe even punish her when she says those words, because if theres no consequence for something shes not suppose to do then its not going to stop her from using those words unless she thinks she has a good reason not to.

My daughter has occationally slipped and let out the occational cuss word, but she usually doesn't know what the word means, and when you tell her it's a naughty word she gets really embarrassed and starts crying. Like the other day she said ****** in the wrong context, (ironically enough she had heard our gay friend say it) and when I told her that word was hateful she got really upset that she had said it. you couldn't pay her to cuss, and If she hears someone cuss, she tells them they shouldn't talk like that. Which is really funny, because I've never disciplined her in terms of language, and I cuss like a sailor.

Maybe you should tell her some other meanings of the word ******, cigarette, or hot coal, not naughty at all. like, i'd have fun chatting online, i was a smoker at the time, and i'd say, 'time for me to go out and suck a ***'. they quickly learned what i meant, but it was funny till they figured it out, then they learned i wasn't an englishman, and they got confused all over again, much giggles.

in the US since that isn't the main meaning of the word, I think if I did that I'd be getting some calls home from the school.

If she's old enough to understand reason, I would suggest explaining the situation to her. Explain that certain words are considered very disrespectful or vulgar. (hey, it's a chance to teach her some new words, too!)

Punishment, in general, is not the most effective method of changing someone's behavior. Instead, you can have her pretend she dropped the milk and let her come up with a way to handle it more appropriately. You can make a game out of it (depending on her age, I suppose). Just be sure to praise her when she handles something correctly. Reinforcement is ALWAYS better than punishment.

Besides, like others said - the words are socially unacceptable, but not the end of the world.

PS. In England during the 1800's, the word "pants" was socially unacceptable. I learned that from my conditioner bottle.
