I hate the immigration topic - I live in the UK so I can't speak for America but it's a huge problem here too, my town in particular has a massive amount of Polish people, some of which can't speak basic English. I like the Australian immigration system - you have to have a certain amount of points to enter, they are short of teachers for example so you would earn points if you were a teacher and you also earn points based on how you will help the economy etc. You must also speak English which I think is the most important thing - to me it is just plain rude to come into a country to live on a permanent basis and not have the courtesy to speak the language.

It irks me that illegal immigrants are here, but it does break my heart to know that it's very difficult to become a citizen. and I know Mexican illegals who are working, and trying to make a living, and saving up so that they can become citizens of the U.S. Yeah. Some illegals really do make a hard effort to try and become legal. It's just not that simple.

From experience, I know how hard it is to cross the Mexican Border. Many people think that illegal immigrants from Mexico are malevolent people trying to take jobs or cause chaos, but they're wrong. Many are here to live the American Dream and pursuit happiness. That's what the Declaration says, a man is able to pursuit happiness. Many think that they should go through the proper channels to become a citizen, but if you already crossed the border, you have to go back to Mexico. Then, you have to go to this assembly where there's this gentleman that you need to talk to to come over here. Your faith lies in the hands of that gentleman. Depending on how good of a day he's having, they get to say yes or no on you becoming a citizen of the United States. And if it's denied, you have to sneak back to the U.S. Trust me, from experience I know how difficult it is.

It's much harder to get visas from certain places, it also depends on the jobs your grandparents have, and how much money they have. It took me and my mother WAY longer then three years to come to America. So not every situation is the same. And if a wealthy company hadn't sponsored her to come here, I'm sure her visa would have been rejected. and FYI, it's much harder to get papers now, then it was before.

America has no official language, I don't know why they should HAVE to learn it. Many other countries have understand english, even if it's just a little bit, you will find someone to help you out. They know that if they don't speak english all that well, people may not hire them. That is their chance to take, but no one should be FORCED to learn a language if they don't want to. And before anyone goes with that whole: "Well, I'm so tired of not understanding people when I go shopping/out to eat/trying to get help." It's not their fault they got hired. Take it up with the people who hired them in the first place.

Younginstasy: I completely agree with you girl and cannot tell you how much I understand you. After all, Obama is encouraging people in American to learn Spanish. People do not have to learn it if they don't want to, it's just an advantage. I am Bilingual myself, and don't call myself trilingual since I only know a bit of French.

It is much better to know two or three languages then just one. I'm Bilingual myself, I would also say I'm trilingual, but I understand more Spanish then I speak it.
