Perhaps people are on welfare because there ARE NO AVAILABLE JOBS?
And quite a few people on welfare are immature and spend all of their money on drugs.

No, most people on welfare don't even bother looking for jobs, which is why they had to put a limited amount on how long one could BE on welfare. Plenty of people just leech off the government because they are lazy and unwilling to take 7$ an hour jobs.

Well, I cannot truthfully say anything about UK immigration.
But several businesses in the US were raided, penalizing illegal aliens as they saw fit. The businesses raised the wages by a dollar or two an hour, and people came flocking by the hundreds, some from towns away.
My point? There is no job that Americans won't do, and depending on illegal immigration for cheap labor will only put hardworking Americans who are legally here out of a job.
I don't get why being legally here, or being American, means that you are more hardworking. Many illegals, especially those from Mexico/Central America, are incredibly hardworking and will do anything for almost no pay. They need the money more than many Americans do. A cruddy apartment in the middle of a ghetto would seem like a mansion to the average Mexican peasant that immigrates to America.

Now we Americans are getting a small taste of what the Native Americans felt when Europeans came here.

The issue at stake isn't immigration, but rather, overpopulation. But, nobody seems to want to address this issue.

what if they have kids and minimum wage wouldn't be enough to cover paying someone to keep your kid while you're at work?

Sure, there are some people like that. But when you're on welfare, it usually means that you are not working. On top of that, there are plenty of FREE day care centers, for working mothers. A lot of people are just picky about where they WANT to leave their kids, rather then doing what is necessary and leaving them there anyway. I know a family member who would NEVER leave her child in a free day care center just because the workers there are black. She would rather stay home until her mother comes home so she can watch her baby and she can go to work.

There are different types of welfare. If you're talking about food stamps, you can work and still be eligible for food stamps. Same for WIC, which is another great program for pregnant and newly moms. I'm talking about receiving money from the government because you are UNABLE to work for a while. Like if you had some kind of injury, or your WIC has run out and you can't leave your child anywhere. It shouldn't stop you from looking for a job, there are plenty of services available, there is no excuse to just it on welfare and attempting to do nothing.

You just made my point. Americans will not dare work for the same wage undocumented immigrants work for. There are many state/federal laws that protect employees from getting unfair wages - therefore undocumented immigrants are not protected because they don't have the correct permits to work in the US.

@younginstasy - I'm assuming you know everyone on welfare to make that assumption, am I correct?

Did I say "everyone"?
Like I said MOST, and I've taken enough social economics classes and seen a lot of documentaries to assume, yes A LOT people on welfare are not out looking for a job.

Like I said, if they were indeed looking for a job the government would not have had to put a cap on how many years a person can be on welfare.

It's jut like you saying:

FNS Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Everything below #23 can help you out. A family cannot possibly survive on that much money every month unless they were earning from another income - that being said, federal guidelines say you must earn a certain amount to be given a certain amount - unless you have a special circumstance. There is a grace period for unemployed persons who is receiving government assistance.

If you feel someone is committing welfare fraud or abusing the program, there is a number for you to call and you can report "most" people.

Seeing as labor laws only protect people who work in the US lawfully, it isn't much of an assumption.

Snap is not the same thing as welfare.

Labor laws protecting someone doesn't mean that they aren't willing to work for lower wages. Not everyone will get testy if they only get paid 7$ an hour compared to whatever an illegal immigrant makes. The cooks at my job are illegals, they make 10$ an hour, the hostess who is an American citizen makes 6.50$ which is below minimum wage, and she doesn't get tipped. So clearly some Americans DO take low paying jobs which pay less then other people.

SNAP is a part of TANF - which is *Temporary* Assistance For Needy Families - as you can see in the chart, only few are employed receiving SNAP. To continue on TANF, you need to either be employed or go to a court hearing and explain why they need to stay. But you're right, I'm abusing the hell out the welfare system - I receive 100% financial aid for school and I'm currently unemployed and not interested in finding one any soon.

Restaurant jobs, like waitressing, is commission pay. They need to be paid a base pay and the rest is based on their performance - minimum wage differs on a local level. Santa Fe's min wage is $9+ while River Falls its & $6.75
