I haven't had the opportunity to teach it yet, but i want to help you and hopefully make you appreciate Literature as well...
In this "guide" i'm going to try listing the main figures of speech used in literature.
Figures of speech are one of the most important trick used by an author to tell or suggest things. Studying those elements can help you understand and/or discorver new paths of analysis for a Literary work.
Keep an eye open for those whenever you have an essay, and it will probably help you developing or strengthening theories of yours.
For now i'm doing the "A-s" only, if ever this thread happens to be useful and successful i'll take time to list the others alphabetically.
I most probably won't list them all as some of them are REALLY rare and it either won't be that useful or necessary.
Feel free to ask about one in the lower posts.

Allegory: The representation of an idea, concept or abstract element by an object or character.Used to materialize abstractive elements, allegories are mostly made to make auditors empathize with the author (make the auditors understand/get along with the speaker's feelings.)
ex: My heart belongs to him (the heart representing the abstract concept of love)

Alliteration: The alliteration is the repetition of a consonant at the beginning of a word. Most alliterations hold their very own meaning according to what consonant is used. The most well known alliteration is the one of the "s", generally refferring to the whistling snake and the original sin. Alliterations with phonetical breaks such as the dentals and bilabial consonants (t, d, b..) generally referers to a rhythmic pattern that might imply tension (a heartbeat, a tambourine...)
ex:"The sibilant sermons of the snake as she discoursed upon the disposition of my sinner's soul seemed ceaseless."

Anacolutheon: The anacolutheon is a break in the sentence's structure. In the everyday life this is considered as a grammatical mistake, yet used in rethorical speeches, this device usually stands for distracting/distabilizing the auditors.
ex:"Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host, That he which hath no stomach to this fight, Let him depart."

Anaphora: Anaphora is the repetition of the same word at the beginning of a sentence. As most repetitions, it generally stands to either create rhythm or insist on an element to bring it some more power.
ex: Mad world! Mad kings! Mad composition!

Antiphrasis: A sentence is considered an antiphrasis when one of the words used, aim at meaning the very contrary of what has been said. Antiphrasis are what introduces irony. Most of the time this device is used to disarm and distabilize the other speaker.
ex: Of course...you're so smart! (when actually the meaning is you're so dumb)

Antithesis: The antithesis is a process that consists in putting two opposite elements aside in a same sentence. This process generally stands for a will to contrast ideas and strengthen the meaning of the dominant statement according to the situation.
ex: "My only love sprung from my only hate"

Aposiopesis: The Aposiopesis occurs when someone makes a strong rupture in the sentence by not finishing it (yet most of the time the rest of the sentence is somewhat implied). That figure of speech generally stands as a device used by the author to make the auditors simpathize and empathize with him as they feel the speaker/author is overwhelmed, and eventually get the auditors to agree with what's stated and feel what the author/speaker feels like. Somewhat a manipulation of the readers.
ex: "He acted like..."

Assonance: It is the repetition of a vowel in a sentence (whatever the place in the word or sentence). Again as for many of the repetition devices in literature, assonances generally stands for creating rhythm and stressing elements, ideas or words of a sentence.
