Silent Hill 2 is probally the scariest game in general because of the psychological abuse that the main protagonist goes through and how each monster reflects a mental standpoint of james.

I'll agree Fear 1 had lots of scares but they were completely expected at most times. If you want a real fright go after the expansion packs and Fear 2. Monolith really listened to the community and made sure each scare was completely random and unexpected. No more flickering lights before each scare. The demo will have you in shambles the first way through.

HL2 has a different type of scare. When i first played through it several years ago, my biggest fear was the Poison headcrabs that take your health down to 1 with a bite (but dont kill you and your given a antidote via the suit right afterwards). If you don't like spiders ignore this game completely.

I think dead space is real scary the game is based on diseases but yet while u play the game they pop around the corner its freaky i tell u dead space is definetely meh game

I'd have to say Resident evil 4, FF3 and FF4 (Fatal frame 3 and 4). Left 4 dead too.

Lol, Resident Evil 4? Have you ever played the other games? Because they are more scary than that load of crap.

Back in the day when I first started playing Resident Evil games, I'd have to say Resident Evil the remake was a scary one. Doesn't scare me now, of course. But when I was little it did sort of make me jump quite a bit.

L4D scared me the first time i played it because i bought it played it at 12:00... Here was my reaction:
Me:Ok so i go through the door?
Cousin: Yeah
Me:-goes through door and down the stair gets jumped by a hunter then i run out of the room screaming-

A more recent game I found frightening is Penumbra. It's not comforting to know there are demon dogs and flying fanged mouths and all you have are things like a hammer or tiny pick-ax to kill them with.

Illbleed is scary mostly because it's hilariously bad yet fun. Some of the enemies and background items made me jump back a bit; Trent the Tree-thing is a very unpretty bit of wood... I really wish it had been released on XBOX.
