Okay, we have one person's view of what makes a geek posted, but it's really a little more centered on what their geekdom is about, so I thought I'd post a more generalized geek test, based on the Mary Sue litmus test. This one aims to see if you qualify as a geek in a more generalized way, and as opposed to a techie or nerd (people who are into real tech and gadgets but fail the geek quality of fictional and trivial fandom). Score it yourself, one point for each qualifier that fits you.
Scoring: 0-20 Paris Hilton How did you manage to get online again? Go back and watch American Idol. 21-40 Hilary Duff You can manage to work a cell phone, but you're not likely to know Star Trek from Star Wars. 41-60 Ashton Kutcher You aren't clueless, but you still have to look things up to sound truly geek. 61-80 Uma Thurman You're not just watching geek, you're participating. Good job, you're part of the geek nation. 81-100 David Tennant You're a super geek, destined to lead us all into the next level. You were born to geek. Yes to: Do you quote sci fi films, series, manga, etc. To people? Even those who think American Idol is high quality television? Do you point out the factual and practical errors of sci-fi or speculative fiction? (IE: Yeah, the TARDIS could tow the Earth back to orbit around the Sun, and people only had to hold onto something like they were on a lurchy bus? And how exactly did gravity not take a holiday when the planet was pulled out of orbit and stopped spinning again?) Do you still love the show with the errors anyway? Do you text in full words because chatspeak is beneath you? But you've said "LOL" or "ZOMG" out loud? Do you find yourself correcting grammar on other people's websites? Have you ever written fanfiction or created fanart? Have you published your fanfiction/fanart? Was it a crossover? Have you ever contributed to a Wiki? Would you break a date for the chance to have dinner with Russell T Davies, Joss Whedon, Bill Nye, Stan Lee, or Bill Gates? Do you read poetry? Can you quote your favorite poem right now? Do you hang out in book stores? Do you love the smell of the printed page even though you're technology addicted? Do you watch the political debates? Do you sudoku? Do you recycle? Do you otherwise try to go green? Have you ever corrected a teacher? During a lecture? And got away with it? Have you ever BS'ed a test and gotten a passing grade? Gotten an A on it? Do you know any spells from Harry Potter? Have you made Sims of your favorite characters? Even though you don't need them? 28 Seems low.

Remember, people, this isn't an IQ test. It doesn't measure if you're smart or not, only if you, on top of being a brain, nerd, or tech, also geek, using the definition of geek as "a person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest." [Wikipedia]. Some very intelligent people will score as Paris Hilton when it comes to geeking. By the way, my score is 72. My brilliant husband, a well-respected high tech infusion nurse with more gadgets than me, scored only a 31. My two daughters both scored in the 80s.
