Default The Complete Guide To GIMP - Tons Of Info!

Hey, fellow Meezy peeps!

I've been looking desperately for a guide to GIMP to help me with things for the future, but unfortunately I've been unable to come across one.
I tried searching, but nope, came up with a load of tutorials for GIMP.

So here's a complete guide to GIMP by your fellow Meezy girl, Heather!

First of all, don't ask, "What is GIMP?", because I have the answer!

GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program.
It is used to edit images and photo's, and you can draw your own things on there.

How do you get it?

GIMP is free to download, so if you don't have it, and would like to get it, click here.
You can download it in any language.

I will tell you how:
If you want your Gimp in English because your cp is in another language
  • If you would just like GIMP to be in English, the easiest way to achieve this is is to uninstall it, then run the installer again, choose Customized setup, and uncheck Translations on the Components page. Without translations, GIMP will always appear in English.

To make it a differnt language:
If you would like GIMP to appear in some other language, you need to set the environment variable LANG to the code of the language you would like to use. You can see the supported language codes by going to share\locale subfolder in the folder where GIMP is installed (typically C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0). Note that not all translations are complete, so you may get a mix of your chosen language and English.

Thanks for that piece of information, Jess (jjia).

I'm going to introduce you to the tools, now!

- Rectangle Select Tool - Select Rectangular Regions.

- Ellipse Select Tool - Select Elliptical Regions.

- Free Select Tool - Select a hand-drawn region with free and polygonal segments.

- Fuzzy Select Tool - Select a contiguous on the basis of colour.

- Colour Select Tool - Select regions with the same colours.

- Colour Picker Tool - Pick colours from image pixels.

- Zoom tool - Adjust the zoom level.

- Move tool - Move image layers and other objects.

- Crop tool - crop the image and parts that go beyond the border boundary.

- Rotate tool - Rotate layers and other objects.

- Text tool - Put text on the image.

- Bucket fill tool - Fill regions with the same colour with different colours.

- Gradient tool - fill selected area with a colour gradient.

- Pencil tool - hard edge painting using a brush.

- Paint brush tool - Paint smooth strokes using a brush.

- Eraser tool - Erase to background or transparency using a brush.

- Airbrush tool - Paint using a brush, with variable pressure.

- Convolve tool - Selective blurring/sharpening using a brush.

- Smudge tool - Smudge selectively using a brush.

- Dodge/burn tool - Selectively lighten or darken using a brush (keeps the same texture when applied).

Those are the basic tools.
When using GIMP, if you scroll over the tool and keep your cursor over the tool, you'll see the description (I copied the descriptions from there).

Wondering how to save your work as PNG?

PNG is the best quality file type for saving things.

This is basically how to do it:

Firstly, click save, then follow this:

If you don't understand it, say here and I'll be happy to help.

The GIF file type is the best, probably the only, file type for animating text.
When using that file type for your siggies for animating your text, remember that your Meez will come out in a little bad quality.

If you don't know how to animate text, here is a very useful tutorial:

Animation in Siggy :P

It's by Jakeewashere, so credits to him.
You can try different types of animation, using his tutorial.
Like, one letter appearing at a time.

EG:

Here are some other animations:

That's done with animations.

OK, so there are lots of file types, but the main ones are PNG, JPG and GIF.

PNG comes out in better quality, without animation.
GIF doesn't come out in good quality, with animation.

So now it's JPG.

When saving a file as JPG, it comes out in quite bad quality.
There are horrible pixels everywhere.
JPG can't handle transparency, layers or animations.

Here's an example of a closeup in JPG file type:

You can see around the eyes, glasses and lips there are visible pixels.

Yet, here's an example of a good quality PNG closeup:

Can you see a huge difference between those two?
(those closeups are mine, ask before saving!)

OK, so that's done for file types!

You can download brushes to GIMP, too.
I'll put up the link to a tutorial for it as soon as I can.

That's all for now, but I'm going to add more.

Stay tuned!
