First off, you want to open up GIMP and go to "File" and click on "New". ![]() Ajust the size to your pleasing ![]() Next, you want to select the text tool from the toolbox. Type whatever you want. For this example I'm going to use the one I made earlier today, a Gerard Way one. Adjust the size and color to whatever. (Tip: Say your backround color is White. Use any other color than white for your text.) Now, you want to go to "Filters" Scroll all the way down to "Alpha To Logo" then select "Neon" ![]() A box called "Script-Fu: Neon" should pop up. In that box, you can change the color you want the neon glow to be and how much neon you want to surround your text. "Effect Size" is how much neon surrounds your text. "Backround Color" is what color your backround of your picture is going to be. "Glow Color" is what color you want the neon glow to be. Change those to whatever you want. As soon as you are satisfied, click "OK" ![]() Give GIMP a few seconds to do its job. You should now have a beautiful neon glow surrounding your text. ![]() (If you are not happy with the results, click "Edit" then "Undo" and repeat the above steps until you are happy.) If you just want a neon glow, you can now stop here. If want animated neon text, keep reading. Now, go to the "Layers" box and find the layer that says "Backround#1" Left click on that layer and scroll down to the bottom where it says, "Flatten Image" click on that. Now, there should be one layer in the "Layers" box instead of four. ![]() Next, you want to left-click on that one layer (I believe it's called "Backround".) and find "Duplicate Layer". Click on that. ![]() You should now have another layer called "Backround Copy". Stay on that layer and find "Colors" at the top of your GIMP screen. Select "Hue Saturation" ![]() Now, find where it says "Hue" and move the little scroll icon forwards. Make your neon glow noticeably darker. When you're happy with your new color, click "OK". ![]() Now, go to the "Backround Copy" layer and left-click on it. Select Duplicate layer again. ![]() You should have a new layer called "Backround Copy #1" Stay on that layer and go back up to "Colors" and select "Hue Saturation" ![]() Only this time, go down to "Hue" and move the scroll icon backwards. Make your text noticeably lighter. When you're happy with your color, click "OK" ![]() Now, you are going to want to go to "Filters" and scroll down to "Animation". Select "Blend" ![]() A new window should pop up with your text and in your "Layers" box, it should say you have 8 frames. If it does, you are ready to save your project. (I can't have any pictures after this point because everytime I try to save my animation, GIMP crashes on me. Sorry! Dx) But WAIT. There's a certain way you have to save it in order for it to work properly. Go to "File" and select "Save As". Type in whatever you want to call your animation, then make sure you type, .gif after your animation's name. A window called "Export File" should pop up. Make sure you select the bubble that says "Save as animation" Now, go down to where it says "Export" and click that. A new window called "Save as GIF" should pop up. Go down to where it says "Animated GIF Options" and make sure "Loop Forever" is checked. Below that, it should say "Delay between frames where unspecified : ______ milliseconds" The higher the number, the slower everything moves. The lower the number, the faster it moves. Set the number to whatever you want. Then click "Save" The saving process is now over, and you have made an animated neon text. You may or may not see your animation in action but anyhow, upload it to your favorite photo uploading website (Tinypic, Photobucket, ect.) and you should see your animation changing colors smoothly. Here's the one I one I've made (I've added a picture and some extra text. (I may make another tutorial about how to do that later.)) ![]() I really hope I explained this process well enough and I hope you understand how to make these. Questions or Comments? Shoot me a PM or comment in this thread. Have fun!
