Chapter one, continued .

I didn't understand what was happening, the whole world around me was spinning out of control. If I didn't leave those bruises on her fragile arms, then who did? And, why would they want to hurt Nikki? What did she do that was bad enough to deserve that?
My questions were soon answered as I was called down to the office. I was scared. If someone would do that to Nikki, what would they do to me? What if the principal thought I did that to her? What if he called my parents?!
I sat in the chair that the bad kids usually sat in. There were no other chairs to be found. After what seemed like an eternity, the secretary asked me to follow her into Mr.Bakers office.
"Ah, Katie, you're here!" He said smiling.
Well, it didn't seem like I was in trouble.. Yet. I was still scared of what would happen next. Terrified, even. "Hi.." I managed to say without crying.
I looked around, Nikki was crying, Mrs.Monroe was on the phone, and there was a stranger there. She was a younger lady, and she was wearing a professional black suit.
"Katie, this is Carrie." He said, gesturing towards like stranger, "she's here to talk to you and Nikki."
I was shocked. What did I do? Why is Carrie even here? What's going on?
I took in a deep breath, and tried to smile. "Okay. But what about?"
"Well..." Carrie said, "it's about what you can tell me, come with me out into the hall, okay girls?"
I looked at Nikki, only to find her looking back, a scared look in her eyes.
"C'mon Nikki, it's okay. I'll be here for you." I said soothingly, "We're friends, remember?"
For the first time, Nikki looked relieved, and she smiled. "Okay, let's go."

We followed Carrie out into the hallway, only to find two more strangers out there.
"Girls, this is Charles," She said, gesturing to a short, bald man in a suit and tie. She then gestured to the lady who was there too, a blonde girl, who looked to be about 19. "And this is Ashley. They're here to talk to you also. We'll only be needing you for a moment, Katie, but if Nikki wants you to stay, you're welcome to."
"I want her to stay." Nikki said before I had a chance to respond.
Carrie and Ashley smiled, "Alright. First, Ashley is going to talk to you guys, Charles and I have to discuss some things."

Ashley then asked us to sit down on the chairs that were backed against the wall. Once we were both seated, she started talking.
"When I was your ages, I was just like you, Nikki." She said, looking at Nikki. "Bruises covered my entire body, and my parents dressed me in long sleeves and long pants to hide them. They also told me not to tell." Tears were beginning to well in Ashley's eyes. "They weren't nice to me, and I needed to tell, but I was afraid of what might happen. The beating and kicking was bad enough."
I cut in abrubtly, "You're parents KICKED you? Why?"
"I don't understand why, it wasn't fair, and it wasn't very nice, either." She said.
"Wait, is that why you have bruised, Nikki?" Deep concern in my eyes, I couldn't help but ask.
"I'm not allowed to tell." She responded, trying not to cry again.
"Nik--" Ashley cut me off.
"It's okay, Nikki, you don't have to tell us." She said kindly. "To continue with my story..." She continued politely, "I didn't know what to do. They told me not to tell, or else. I dealt with it for so many years, and it got to the point where they started breaking things." She point to her arm. "You see this scar?" She ran her fingers down a long, curved scar on her arm. "That's how bad things got."

Nikki couldn't take it anymore, she broke down in tears. "What if that happens to me?!"
"We won't LET it happen, Nikki." Charles said, cutting in on Ashley. "That's why we're here, to protect you."

Just then, my parents walked in.
"MOMMY!" I said happily, "DADDY!" I ran over and gave them both big hugs.
"Hi sweetie!" My mom said.
"Ah, Mr. And Mrs.Conrad," said Carrie, "would you mind coming with us, into the office for a moment?"
"Okay." My parents said in unison.

I was happy to see my parents there, but.. Why were they there? I was confused again. I could hardly even listen to the end of Ashley's story.
But Nikki did.

A few weeks later:

Nikki let out a sigh of relief. She was out of that awful home, and into a new one. That new home just happened to be her BEST friends hosue. My house.

"GIRLS!" My mom called up the stairs, "Dinner time! Clean up your dolls and c'mon downstairs!"
"Okay mom!" I yelled back.
As most little girls would, we picked up our dolls and shoved them under the bed, and quickly ran downstairs.
"Mmm!" I said, taking in the scent of chicken, "Smells good, mommy!"
"It does!" Nikki said, agreeing.
My mom smiled, "Why, thank you, girls! Here we go..." She said, passing us our plates. "Dig in!"
"Thank-you!" Nikki and I said in unison. We then burst out in a giggling fit.

I smiled. I was so happy to have Nikki living with us, even if it was only for a short time. I got to see my best friend EVERYDAY. It was like she was my sister. "I'm really glad you're here, Nikki." I said, my prettiest smile on my face.
"I'm happy to be here!" She said, hugging me.
She was wearing a T-Shirt, and most of her bruises were gone. The pain she'd been struggling with was finally gone, and even if the pain inside of her did resurface, I'd be there.

"All done!" I said, I then looked to Nikki's plate, to find that she'd been done for some time now. "Let's clear off our plates and go play outside!"
Nikki giggled. "Okay! Let's go on the swings!"
We quickly cleared our plates off into the compost, as my mom had taught me, and dashed outside.
The sun was just setting, and as we swung on the swings in my big backyard, I knew everything was okay. At least for a little while, anyway .
