| CHAPTER FIVE That was one large woman. I don’t know which was bigger, actually, her ego or her waistband. I guess she had to store all of that fury somewhere.“You shall call me ‘Ms.’ Conrad, and ‘Ms.’ Conrad only. Yes, I am married, however if you happen to falter and call me otherwise, you will be required to drop one pound into the name jar at the front of the room.” Ms. Conrad stated strictly, as she stood at the half podium set on a table in the front of the classroom, flanking it on both sides with her girth. I leaned over to Danny, who was staring with wide eyes at the woman. “Told you.” I whispered with a smirk. Danny chuckled under his breath, holding his hand over his mouth to try and remain unnoticed. “It is unbelievably degrading that it should be the woman who must change her name for a man!” The woman went on rambling, losing the interest of over 90% of the class. In boredom, I pulled my notebook down onto my lap, so that it was angled towards me, propped up on the edge of the desk. I flipped open to my lizard drawing, and pulled a pen out to start inking it. “The world is full of cruel, domineering people who are dying to take advantage of- excuse me, sir in the grey sweatshirt?” Though I hadn’t meant to be rude, I didn’t answer her, or even look up from my notebook. Silence hung in the room, as slowly each student turned to look over at me. Eventually, Danny, who was sat in the desk next to me, tapped on my desk a few times with his finger. I looked up then, seeing the flames engulfing Ms. Conrad’s eyes. “Are you taking notes, Mr...?” She snarled angrily tilting her head while her crazily painted thick-rimmed glasses slid down her nose slightly, and waited me to answer. “Uh, Dougie.” I said, flipping my notebook shut. Everyone in the class was then began to stare at Ms. Conrad, wondering how she was going to react. The woman continued to eye me darkly. “Mr. Douglas, we only go by formal names in this classroom.” She spat at me, as she opened up a black folder on her podium, which I assumed was a list of student names. I raised my eyebrows at her. “My name isn’t Douglas, it’s just Dougie.” I corrected her, causing the class to snicker gently. “I won’t answer you again if you don’t call me by my right name.” Ms. Conrad’s face nearly began to turn purple. “You will do as you’re told, Mr. Douglas.” She hissed harshly, picking up a red pen. “I don’t know what sort of shenanigans you played to have your nickname printed on the class list, but it won’t fly in this classroom. Now, one more interruption from you, and you’ll be staying after school for detention.” I couldn’t believe it, she was more of a witch that I’d ever imagined. Not wanting to give her any satisfaction, I set my jaw and looked away from her, and over to the clock hung on the wall. It was 2:01, only four minutes until the final bell. I had thought that this class would be a little less like hell, seeing as I had a friend with me, but Danny didn’t do anything but give me piteous, helpless looks. I could tell that he was going to answer to ‘Mr. Daniel’ whenever the fat feminist beckoned him to. I’d need to work on him. Finally, the final bell rang, and I pulled myself out of my desk and made a beeline towards the door. I made it out of the building in what felt like record time, because Ms. Conrad’s room was near the front doors. Soon, I was walking past the busses down the school driveway, towards the road that would eventually lead to my street. After a little while of walking, I stuffed my hand into my pocket to grab my mp3 player. As I unravled the earplugs, I heard a familiar voice call from behind me. “Dougie!” Danny yelled, and I turned around to see him running towards me. “Dougie, wait up!” I halted as I continued to try and unknot my headphones cord. Danny reached me soon, and we carried on walking. “Hey, is your house in this direction?” He asked, pointing ahead of us. “Yeah, Brighton Road.” I answered, only putting one tangled earphone in. “It’s past the intersection, on the left. Danny nodded and adjusted his bag on his shoulder. “Wicked, my new house is just up there, only on the right. On the corner of Cricket Avenue, the two-family home.” He said uncertainly. “Oh, alright. Guess we can walk home together everyday, right?” I said as I began to scan down my list of songs, not caring that he lived in such a ratty place. My house wasn’t perfect either, and I bet that his family life put mine to shame. He seemed like a pretty straightedge kid. Danny nodded with a smile on his face. “Mm, yeah, sounds good. Hey, you know, I was kind of wondering if you wanted hang out sometime? Now that I know that we live so close, it’ll be easy to just get together and hang.” He said, though he was hesitant. After I didn’t answer for a second, he seemed embarrassed. “I mean, we don’t have to, but it would just be cool if-” I chuckled slightly at his sudden panic. “Hey, mate, relax. It’d be cool to hang out with you.” I assured him, feeling how my lip ring suddenly pinched my tongue when I had laughed. Danny smiled in relief. “Brilliant. Well, uh, are you busy today?” He suddenly burst in question, kind of like I had this morning. I wondered how he managed to seem so introverted this morning, yet now he was acting like he was willing to do anything to be my best mate. I shook my head, not wanting to refuse this opportunity to get to know him better. I could see that he was someone who could make my life a little more livable. “Nah, I wasn’t planning on doing anything really, just playing my bass some and taking care of my pets.” “You play bass?” He said, interested. “I play guitar, have since I was five.” He added proudly. His hair was suddenly blown all over the place by the wind, causing it to flutter into his eyes and curl slightly. “Maybe we could play together, if you want. We can stop by your place and pick up your bass, and then go over my house. I’ve got a few amps we can hook up.” I nodded. “Sounds like a plan. I’ve got to stop and feed Jerry and Zuki anyways. They might eat their food bowl if I don’t.” I told him, and we turned on to my street. Last edited by lindsayx159; 16th July 2009 at 10:13 AM. | |||||||

| CHAPTER SIX With my bass slung over my shoulder, I followed Danny into the left side door of the two family house, noting that the other half was boarded up with planks on the windows and doors. So, the place was even shabbier than I had thought, but at least they were living on the better half. “Do you know what’s wrong with that part of the house?” I asked as we climbed the stairs up to the door, which had a nice shredded screen covering it. Danny shrugged. “The people who used to live in that half were drug dealers. Had an entire little laboratory in the kitchen and everything. No one wanted to live next to that, so the original owners of this half of the house had to sell cheap.” He explained, as he pushed through the screen and the wooden doors. We were greeted by the smell of something roasting in the oven, mainly because the door led straight into the kitchen area. Standing near the sink was a blond woman, wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt, with her hair pulled up messily into a bun. She turned around when she heard the door open, and smiled at first. Quickly, however, her face turned to one of minor shock. “Oh, Danny, you’re home. Who’s this?” She asked, her voice wavering slightly. She was looking me up and down, almost as though she was searching to see if I was holding a weapon to Danny or something. Danny turned towards me and put his hand on my shoulder to move me forward. We were packed tight by the door, so Danny pushed me in front of himself. “This is Dougie, mum. I met him in school today. Do you mind if he stays over for a bit?” He asked, leaning around me and my bass to look at his mum. Her face suddenly when completely bright. “Of course he can stay, dear. Would you like to have dinner with us, Dougie? I’ll set a place at the table for you, if you’d like.” She said sweetly, sounding overjoyed. I nodded, though I was slightly put off by how quickly her mood had swung. Danny began to push me forward gently, towards the door at the other end of the kitchen. “Dougie and I are going to go upstairs and hook up my amps. Call me down if you need any help.” He told her, just as he pulled open the door. “Alright, but Danny love, could I talk to you for one moment please?” his mum asked sweetly, holding up her finger. “You can go on upstairs, Dougie, Danny’s room is on the left, besides the toilet.” I nodded in response again, and just before I left through the door, Danny snuck me an apologetic shrug. I sent him a faint smile to show him that I didn’t mind. Once I was through the door, I heard Danny push it nearly closed behind me, only leaving it a crack open. Initially, I was going to head straight for the stairs, but I halted when my curiosity peaked. What did his mum have to tell him? I had a vain feeling that it was about me. Did she not like me already, or worse, had she seen me before, perhaps while I was out? Though I felt a twinge of regret for sneaking around and being dishonest so soon with Danny, I moved back towards the kitchen door, and got as close as I could to the crack. “Yeah, me neither. He’s really nice.” I heard Danny say, and although I couldn’t see him through the crack in the door, I could tell that he was smiling. “He does look very sweet, honey. I can’t believe that you managed to find one so quickly, though. How did you find out?” His mother asked. I furrowed my brow in confusion. What had she meant by ‘one’? Was I this ‘one’? Danny sighed. “Mum, he’s not...” he said sharply, yet in a hushed tone. “Oh,” his mum replied, sounding shocked again. “Well, does he know that...?” “No, mum. He doesn’t know anything. Please, please don’t bring it up again, alright? I really want to at least have one friend.” What the hell? I found myself thinking angrily. He was keeping something from me, and it was obviously important. I mean, yeah, I was keeping a secret about my life from him, but it didn’t matter to anyone but myself as to who I slept with. Danny was keeping a secret from me that could seriously jeopardize our new friendship, while I was keeping a secret that was pretty much every man’s secret fantasy. While I was ranting inside my own mind, I completely didn’t realize that Danny had swung open the door that I was pressed up against. I stumbled forward slightly, feeling my lip ring catch on my gum again. I cussed sharply, then looked up at Danny, who’s expression was one of complete horror. “Dougie, what were you...?” He began, but I pushed by him towards the other end of the kitchen, furiously holding my hand up to my mouth to try and ease the pain in my lip. “I’m going home.” I interrupted him with my simply statement, and grabbed on to the doorknob of the other door. “Wait, Dougie, please!” Danny called after me desperately, trying to get me to stay. I spun around sharply, and stared him down. “Are you gonna tell me this big secret you’re trying to keep from me, mate?” Danny hesitated. “Are... Are you gonna tell me why you were eavesdropping?” He asked, trying to be brave. I scoffed and turned away from him. “F*ck you.” I snarled, and slammed the door shut. | |||||||
